During a residency in Aberystwyth, I discovered the letters of Gwen John at the National Library of Wales. Corresponding with friends and family, John revealed both the intimate, mundane aspects of her life as an artist in Paris as well as the joys and disappointments. My response to the letters, was to explore not only their content but the physical materiality and archival preservation of them. What began to emerge was a remote dialogue, separated by a century of time, between two female artists.
Work was presented at Oriel Davies Gallery in Newtown, Wales in their Test Bed Space from 14th November 2015 – 27th January 2016.
The exhibition and production of work was generously supported by Arts Council Wales.
